Gulls Special Teams Falter Against Roadrunners

Statistically speaking the Gulls have the best power play in the American Hockey League and it’s not even close. San Diego was converting nearly 28% of their chances with a man advantage, a dizzying pace for any professional hockey team.

But every now and then things just don’t work.    That was the case Saturday night in a 4-2 loss to the Tucson Roadrunners where the Gulls went 0-for-7 with a man advantage.

Despite the stalled special teams the Gulls were able to build an early lead. Joe Blandisi and Corey Tropp both scored 1st period goals to put San Diego up 2-0 after 20 minutes.

But then Tucson got going, led by sniper Dylan Stromme. The 20-year-old super prospect scored a pair of power play goals, sparking Tucson to score four unanswered. Stromme has 37 points in just 24 games.

These teams play twice more, on Monday and Wednesday, both in Arizona. With the loss the Gulls drop into 3rd place in the Pacific Division, just behind the Stockton Heat.
